Serum folate and homocysteine in chronic schizophrenic patients.
نویسنده
چکیده
Introduction Homocysteine is an amino-acidic product of methionine demethylation. Hyperhomocysteinemia (which is frequently found in schizophrenia (Nishi et al. 2014)) increases cardiovascular risk (Marti-Carvajal et al. 2009) and may trigger neuronal apoptosis (Mattson & Shea 2003). It may result from low folate intake (Selhub 2006), while folate deficiency is common in schizophrenia and may be associated with severity of negative symptoms (Goff et al. 2004) or cognitive deficits. Below, a new report on folate and homocysteine levels in schizophrenia is provided.

متن کاملSerum Levels of Homocysteine, Vitamin B12, and Folic Acid in Patients with Alzheimer’s Disease
Background: Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia in the elderly. Serum levels of homocysteine have been related to increased cortical and hippocampal atrophy. We aimed to determine the serum levels of homocysteine, folate, and vitamin B12 in patients with Alzheimer's disease. Methods: Blood levels of homocysteine and its biological determinants, folate, and vitamin B12 were m...
متن کاملSerum Homocysteine and Folate Levels in Korean Schizophrenic Patients
OBJECTIVE This study was conducted to confirm the results of the authors' previous research on schizophrenia manifesting high serum homocysteine and low folate levels. This study is anchored on a theory that a high serum homocysteine concentration affects schizophrenia by virtue of a neurotoxic mechanism, and on a report that some schizophrenia patients with high homocysteine levels benefited f...

Background: Diabetes mellitus is the most common cause of renal failure, blindness, non- traumatic amputation and neuropathy. Homocysteine, a sulfurated amino acid, has a close correlation with Methionine and Cysteine. The conversion of Methionine to Homocysteine and Cysteine is required coenzymes like vitamin B6, B12 and Folate. The effect of Metformin on serum Homocysteine level by decreasing...

Background & Aim: Owing to decreased absorption of cobalamin in the elderly, cobalamin deficiency is a common problem in these subjects. On the other hand, insufficient vitamin B12 status may increase the incidence of atherosclerotic and neurodegenerative disorders. Recently investigators have recommended B12 monitoring in the elderly and detecting at risk subjects in the early stages of d...
